Tom Bihn – Let’s Give the Cubelet a Little Love!

The Tom Bihn Cubelet is one of the more diminutive in the range of products made by the beloved Seattle-based company. But make no mistake. While it may be diminutively named, the Cubelet occupies a very large space in the organization department.

Cubelet from the Outside in

Made from one of two fabrics, 200d Halcyon or 210d Cerylon, the Cubelet measures in at 5.1”w x 5.1”h x 2”d. Structurally, the Cerylon has a slight advantage when it comes to the ability for the Cubelet to hold its shape. But the difference between the two fabrics here is negligible.

The number 5 zipper that rounds both top corners opens wide enough to provide easy access to its contents. Even those with larger hands will have no problem with the opening. Note that the snake knot zipper pulls shown in the pictures are a small mod. They’re just easier for me to grab.

At each zipper end is an o-ring that facilitates easy fastening of the Cubelet inside a pocket or compartment that uses the omnipresent and “Bihnian” organizational system. You’ll have no problem finding a place to fasten these wonderful little cubes. You can easily attach a shoulder strap for crossbody or over-the-shoulder carry, too!

A diagonal logo strip tastefully adorns the lower right corner of the front of the Cubelet. It’s minimal but revealing. In truth, I rather think that they could have gotten away with using the same logo badge on the lower right that we find on the Bantam or most other larger bags. Others may disagree. I, personally, think it would be a nice look.

So what’s it like inside?

Inside out… Cubelet is Super Solid

Materially, the inside of the Tom Bihn Cubelet is the same as the outside with two additions that make it even more solid. See them?

There is no expense spared for size. Even the smaller pieces in the Tom Bihn catalog are constructed with strength, solidity, and silky smoothness on the forefront. All the seams are bound to add strength. They’re not coming apart. A layer of 100d piscine lines the bottom adding strength to an already solidly built wide open interior. The presence of 100d piscine also serves as a nod to and, perhaps, Cubelet’s place in the line of Tom Bihn packing cubes.

But What Can the Cubelet Hold?

That’s really on you. Cubelet is rated at half a liter volumetrically and it can hold more than you think. A half a liter sounds like a pittance but, if we’re looking in terms of smaller EDC items, it’s more than ample – especially if one is more organized about carry. Cubelet provides plenty of open space into which you can dump that smaller gear that can go missing so easily in the pockets and crevices of most larger bags.

For me, as an example, I use a Cubelet in each side pocket of the Synik. One Cubelet holds all of the clips, hooks, and carabiners that I might need. Ok. I really haven’t needed any of these things but maybe once or twice since I put them in. I’m just not the best at prioritizing EDC. The other Cubelet holds more medicinally-focused items. So here’s what I have in them:

Cubelet 1 – Tethered by a Tom Bihn Key Strap
Cubelet 2 – Tethered by a Tom Bihn Key Strap

Can they fit more? Yep. Both of them.

Conclusion

So the Tom Bihn Cubelet is a pretty simple piece of organization-focused carry that offers an endless range of packing possibilities. It has a solid foothold in the Tom Bihn lineup and and a price point that makes it an easy-to-justify purchase for anybody looking to expand their EDC modularity or merely add a small piece to their collection of carry gear. The only question is…

What’s your favorite color?

I think my next one will be that completely scrumptious Sangria Cerylon!

How I Got This Item for Review

I purchased this item myself. Tom Bihn did not supply it to me for review. The opinions in this review are my own and would not be swayed one way or another if I had been given a review unit by Tom Bihn.
